Hey there future Bali explorer! Looking for best places to stay in Bali for first timers? You’re in luck. Bali is such a viiiiibe. I regularly dip in and out of Bali, and especially enjoy the community, and breadth of activities that it has to offer. So for all of you wondering, where is the best place to stay in Bali for first timers…I’m here to guide you on what you can expect in each pocket in Bali (because they all really do come with different flavors!)

Best places to stay in Bali for first timers

First time traveling solo? Get the solo travel for the modern woman guide to travel like a pro. 55+ pages packed with my nomadic experience so you get magic from your trip.

Seminyak

EVERYONE goes to Seminyak. And I honestly don’t know why. Totally overrated. I guess it offers some cocktail of luxury and vibrant nightlife. But between us? I’ve always found the crowd in Seminyak is a bit too drunk chad for my liking.

I’d rather take a hop and skip to Canggu where there’s a little less bro jock vibes in the air — but more on that shortly.

Canggu

Less polished but more authentic than Seminyak, Canggu offers a haven of beach clubs, vibrant street art, and an infectious party vibe. Yes honey, you could be dancing till dawn. Whether you’re there to catch waves or enjoy a golden sunset, Canggu promises a gooooood time.

🌊 Surf

Echo Beach

Surf’s up, my friend! Echo Beach isn’t just about those gnarly waves (though they’re totally rad for all levels). Once you’re done riding, head to one of those chill cafes or beach bars. And if you’re about that seafood life, the Echo Beach Club’s BBQ is a must-try as you toast to a Bali sunset.

🏋️ Fitness

CrossFit Wanderlust

On vacay but fitness is life? Canggu’s got your back. CrossFit Wanderlust is THE spot. Whether you’re just starting or you’ve got those muscles flexing, they’ll push you good. Sweat it out, feel the burn, and join the crew.

🎨 Culture

Deus Ex Machina

Not just a bite to eat – it’s a whole mood. Bikes, local art, live tunes, and a taste of the real Canggu. Dive into the culture, feast on some fab food, and let the beat move you.

🎉 Nightlife

Old Man’s

For when the sun goes down and you’re ready to get down! By day, it’s all chill. But come night? Oh honey, it’s the party central of Canggu. From beer pong to trivia, there’s always something popping. So, mingle, dance, and live that island life!

Ubud

Ubud is a sanctuary where spirituality meets natural beauty. But these days it seems to be meeting quite a bit of traffic too these days! Especially during the high tourist season. So if you’re looking for a rested spiritual retreat, plan around this.

🧘 Pyramids of Chi

Soul seekers, you absolutely cannot miss the Pyramids of Chi. This place is pure magic with a capital M! They’ve tapped into the ancient Pyramid Power, combined it with Sacred Geometry and the mystical energy of Bali to create a space that’s all about healing and zen vibes. And guess what? They host events like sound healing sessions, light therapy, cacao ceremonies (yes, chocolate lovers, this is for you), and workshops designed for spiritual growth. Hungry after all that soul-searching? Head to their open-air café that serves healthy and super tasty dishes (the pumpkin soup is to die for!). And don’t forget to visit their gift shop and the peaceful gardens that scream tranquility.

🤫 Bali Silent Retreat

Now, let’s talk about the ultimate zen place: the Bali Silent Retreat. Imagine a place nestled in nature, offering you a canvas to reconnect with your inner self. It’s not just a retreat, it’s an experience that promises tranquility, healing, and a deeper connection with your own spirit through guided meditation sessions. Trust me, this is where you find peace, realign with your energies, and just get to listen to your soul amidst all the beautiful surroundings Bali has to offer.

Uluwatu

Nusa Penida

If Bali was a playlist, Nusa Penida’s the underrated track everyone sleeps on! It’s wild, rugged, and a little off the beaten path. Just remember, it’s more raw and real compared to the polish of Seminyak and Canggu.

🍽️ Restaurant

The Gallery

Located in the heart of Nusa Penida, The Gallery offers a fusion of western and Indonesian cuisines, and is a perfect spot for those seeking a unique dining experience.

🌅 Sunset

One of Nusa Penida’s most iconic spots, Kelingking Beach is known for its T-Rex shaped cliff. It’s a breathtaking location to witness the sun dip below the horizon.

Staying in Canggu: Pros

Canggu is a haven for the young, the adventurous, and everyone in between. Well according to my personal love affair with this radiant hub at least.

Unbeatable Nightlife

  • Canggu nights are a never-ending party where beach clubs transition smoothly from chill daytime vibes to starry-skied dance floors. It’s not just about dancing; it’s making unexpected friends and finding your tribe.

Surfer’s Paradise

  • Whether you’re a surfing pro or just starting out, Canggu beaches have the perfect wave for you. Find a community united by love for the ocean; where the beaches are your town squares. It’s more than a benefit; it’s a lifestyle.

Artist’s Retreat

  • Every corner in Canggu is bursting with creativity. Picture vibrant murals, cool cafes, and artistic buzz EVERYWHERE. If you want a truly eclectic experience, stay in an artist residency! There are several on AirBnb.

Staying in Canggu: Cons

As much as I cherish Canggu for its vibrant and youthful spirit, it is essential to approach every adventure with a well-rounded perspective. Here are some aspects that might pose as cons for travelers venturing into this bustling Bali paradise:

Crowded Spots

  • Canggu, a victim of its own success, can be a magnet for the crowds. Especially in peak seasons. While the buzz has its charm, Bali traffic does not.. Heads up for those seeking a peaceful retreat!

Watch That Wallet

  • anggu’s popularity comes with a price hike. Dining, staying, and playing here requires some extra bucks compared to places like Sanur or Uluwatu. A bit of savvy planning helped me to not break the bank while enjoying all the vibrancy on offer.

Traffic Tales

  • Yes, the narrow roads here do get jam-packed, making the travel sometimes stretch into oblivion. I discovered renting a scooter wasn’t just a workaround for the traffic but a fun way to enjoy the Balinese scenery at my pace – highly recommend it for a breezy exploration!

Best Hotels in Uluwatu Bali

Best places to stay in Uluwatu - Six Senses Uluwatu

Six Senses Uluwatu

At Six Senses Uluwatu, you step into luxury encapsulated by Bali’s grandeur. Picture a dinner under the stars and rooms that offer the grand theater of the Indian Ocean, all right from your window.

Best places to stay in Uluwatu - Anantara Uluwatu

Anantara Uluwatu Bali Resort

Anantara Uluwatu Bali Resort is where luxury intertwines with Balinese culture. As the resort unfolds along the ocean, it reveals breathtaking views. And the true highlight? Experiencing a traditional Balinese dance at their cliff-edge amphitheater.

Best places to stay in Uluwatu - Bulgari Resort Bali

Bulgari Resort Bali

Things to Do in Uluwatu Bali

🌅 Experience

Uluwatu Temple Sunset Tour

An unmissable experience, the Uluwatu Temple offers a tranquil setting to witness a ballet of colors in the sky as the sun sets. Enhance the experience with the Kecak Fire Dance, unveiling the rich narratives of Balinese mythology as day turns to night.

🏄 Adventure

Surfing at Padang Padang Beach

Padang Padang Beach invites surfing enthusiasts of all levels to ride its vibrant waves.

🎨 Culture

Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park

From the majestic statue of Lord Vishnu to a vibrant array of performances and exhibitions, it’s a hub of artistry, offering a deep dive into the rich cultural heritage that defines Bali.

Staying in Uluwatu: Pros

Uluwatu is more than just a destination; it’s an experience.. Here’s the breakdown of the things that make Uluwatu shine:

Picturesque Beaches

  • Uluwatu’s landscapes are a vibrant canvas of pristine beaches where golden sands meet turquoise waters.

Cultural Richness

  • From the enthralling Kecak Fire Dance to the vibrant art scene, it’s a place where stories come to life. A wonderful medley of traveler culture woven into Balinese traditions.

Luxury Accommodations

  • Known for luxury accommodations that promise breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean, Uluwatu perfectly blends old school elegance with the vibrant palette of nature.

Staying in Uluwatu: Cons

Yes, Uluwatu is stunning with its picturesque cliffs and tranquil beaches. Buuuut there are  a few downsides that might just tip the scales for some of you travelers. Here’s the no-frills lowdown:

Muted Nightlife

  • Forget the vibrant, energetic nightlife scenes of Seminyak or Canggu; Uluwatu is the subdued cousin offering quieter nights. Yes, there are cliff-top bars giving off tranquil evening vibes with killer views but if dancing the night away at lively clubs is your scene, Uluwatu might not hit the mark. It’s more of a gentle lullaby than a pulsating nightclub beat.

Spread-Out Attractions

  • The tranquil retreat comes with a catch – the attractions and beaches are pretty spread out. I found myself relying heavily on hired transportation to explore the dispersed beauty spots. It’s tough to get around if you don’t rent a scooter. While all that zipping around on motorbikes adds to the adventure, it’s not exactly the convenience my city slicker self was used to.

Varied Accommodation Amenities

  • While there are resorts dripping in luxury, some accommodations in Uluwatu lean towards the…more hippieside… in terms of amenities. Unless you’re willing to pay four or five star prices, it may be calm over comfort, in certain spots.

Best Hotels in Ubud Bali

Ubud, Bali’s spiritual center, was a dream come true for my soul. Imagine lush green fields harmoniously blending with the vibrant spirit of Balinese culture – that’s Ubud for you. Want to experience this charm for yourself? Here’s my golden list of the best places to stay:

Best places to stay in Ubud - Mandapa

Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve

For me, this place was where luxury kissed Ubud’s vibrant nature daily. Nestled by the Ayung River, Mandapa greeted me with top-notch spa therapies and yoga sessions, all wrapped in Bali’s ancient healing touch.

Best places to stay in Ubud - Four Seasons

Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan

Staying here felt like stepping into a live painting every day, where luxury met the wild, green arms of Ubud. Four Seasons Resort is not just a stay; it’s an experience, with private yoga sessions on a lotus pond and guided tours exploring the art pulse of Ubud.

Best places to stay in Ubud - Viceroy Bali

The Viceroy Bali

Perched with a grand view of the Valley of the Kings, the Viceroy hooked me with its offer of a vibrant Balinese elegance. And if you are up for it, they offer helicopter tours to witness Bali’s volcanic landscapes from the sky, adding a dash of adventure to the luxurious embrace.

🏄 Adventure

Experience adrenaline-pumping rafting adventures at Ayung River.

🌅 Nature

Sunrise Trek to Mount Batur

Embark on a pre-dawn trek to Mount Batur to witness the grandeur of a Balinese sunrise.

Staying in Ubud: Pros

Ubud, nestled in the heart of Bali, cannot be missed, especially if you are seeking the true spirit of Bali.. Here are the highlights of my stay:

Cultural Dive

  • Ubud is a rich tapestry of Balinese culture, where every street corner tells a story through Gamelan music or traditional dances. Think art galleries, craft markets, and a whirlpool of vibrant traditions waiting to be explored.

Nature’s Lap

  • Wake up to the melodies of nature in Ubud, with its green rice fields and flowing rivers painting a tranquil and nurturing canvas each day. It’s a place that brings you closer to earth in the most vibrant way.

Wellness Hub

  • If rejuvenation is what you’re after, Ubud won’t disappoint. Dive deep into wellness through yoga retreats, healing Balinese massages, and spiritual growth experiences in this nurturing haven.

Staying in Ubud: Cons

Ubud is undeniably enchanting with its rich culture and spiritual vibes, but it has its quirks that might not sit well with everyone. Let’s shed some light on the not-so-glamorous parts of Ubud:

Crowded Streets

  • Yes, Ubud is popular, perhaps too popular. During peak seasons, expect bustling crowds and packed restaurants, potentially overshadowing the tranquility that Ubud promises.

Quiet Nights

  • If you’re a night owl craving vibrant nightlife, you might find Ubud a bit too quiet. With limited nightlife options, the town offers tranquil walks under a starry sky and quiet dinners, which could be a pro or a con, depending on your style!

Transportation Woes

  • Navigating through Ubud can sometimes be a test of patience with traffic jams and scanty parking spaces. The infrastructural growth is yet to match the tourist influx, making for some stalled adventures through the busy streets.

Things to do in Munduk Bali

Munduk stands out as the epitome of tranquil beauty, weaving nature and adventure seamlessly into one. Let’s dive right into what makes Munduk a must-visit.

💫 Insider Tip:

If you’re a solo traveler like me, opting for guided tours in Munduk can not only enhance your experience but provide a secure way to explore the region.

🤳🏻 Experience

Munduk Waterfalls

Picture a hike that is more of a spiritual journey, a pathway through Bali’s verdant heart guided by the harmonious symphony of cascading waterfalls and cheerful birdsong.

☕️ Coffee

Coffee Plantations

Attention all coffee addicts! A visit to Munduk’s coffee plantations is non-negotiable. Believe me, the guided tours are an aromatic journey through the rich Balinese coffee culture, ending with a delightful tasting session

🌅 Nature

Tamblingan Lake

Imagine a day immersed in the quiet yet profound narratives whispered by nature at Tamblingan Lake. If contemplative silence and nature photography call out to you, this place is your dream come true.

💃 Girl’s Note:

Munduk is a haven for solo female travelers, offering not just picturesque locations but also a secure and serene environment to reconnect with oneself. Safety combined with beauty, it’s a win-win, isn’t it?

Staying in Munduk: Pros

Munduk offers a more serene and nature-oriented experience than other tourist spots in Bali. Here’s why it could be the perfect choice for your stay:

Nature at its Finest

  • Think picturesque landscapes with waterfalls, lakes, and lush forests; Munduk is a nature lover’s paradise offering a tranquil escape from the buzz of the more commercialized areas in Bali.

Cool and Comfortable

  • The region is at a higher altitude, blessing it with a cooler climate. It’s the perfect place to beat the Bali heat and enjoy outdoor activities without breaking (too much of) a sweat.

Pure Balinese Charm

  • Munduk isn’t swarmed with tourists, helping it retain an authentic charm.

Staying in Munduk: Cons

Munduk is a haven of tranquility, but it comes with a few trade-offs. Here’s what you need to know before you book your trip:

Chilled (Too Chilled?) Nightlife

  • Munduk nights are low-key. Actually, very low-key.It’s more about relaxed, early nights than vibrant nightlife — perfect for early birds, but maybe not the party owls.

Limited Stay Options

  • It’s a tad limited on the upscale lodging front, so it might not be the top pick for the luxury-seekers out there.

Off the Beaten Path (Literally)

  • Nestled in Bali’s mountainous region, reaching Munduk is somewhat of an adventure, especially with those winding roads that are not everyone’s cup of tea.

🔥 Hot Tip:
Consider the Location: Ensure the hotel you book is conveniently located near the attractions you plan to visit, saving travel time and allowing you to make the most of your stay.

Travel Insurance in Bali

Navigating the picturesque landscapes of Bali is like wandering through a dream, but even in the most beautiful dream, it’s essential to keep your wits about you. During my extensive sojourns across Bali, I have realized the imperative role that a robust travel insurance policy plays in ensuring a stress-free and secure travel experience. Let’s delve deep into understanding why having travel insurance in Bali is not just a good idea but a necessity.

🔥 Hot Tip:
Comprehensive Coverage: Opt for a policy that covers a wide range of potential issues, including medical emergencies and adventure sports coverage.

Why You Need Travel Insurance in Bali

In all my trips to Bali, I’ve learned never to underestimate the unexpected.

Travel insurance has been my safety net against unforeseen medical and travel issues. It’s not just about financial protection; it’s the peace of mind that lets me truly relax and enjoy the island.

Coverage to Look For

When it came to choosing the right travel insurance for my Bali trips, I ensured it covered a range of aspects to grant me peace of mind during my stay. It’s advisable to opt for a policy that covers medical emergencies, including evacuation and hospitalization.

Pickpockets are common in Bali. Ensure coverage for personal belongings, trip cancellations, and interruptions are high on your list.

If you’re planning on indulging in all the adventure that Bali has to offer, an insurance policy covering activities such as surfing and hiking would be a prudent choice.

Claiming Insurance in Bali

I found that claiming insurance in Bali was straightforward, provided I had kept all the necessary documents handy. It is always wise to keep a digital copy of your policy and to notify your insurance provider immediately in case of any mishap.

With SafetyWing’s comprehensive coverage tailored for global wanderers, you can venture into every corner, including Bali, with confidence. Dive in, SafetyWing‘s got your back. 🌍✈️🛡️.

🔥 Hot Tip:
Remember to retain all relevant receipts, reports, and paperwork, as these would be crucial when filing for a claim. My advice would be to always opt for insurance companies known for their hassle-free claim process to ensure a smooth experience in unforeseen circumstances.

Staying Connected from the Minute You Land

In the digital age, staying connected while traveling is not a mere luxury but a necessity.

Leveraging eSIM technology has been a game-changer in starting my Bali adventures on the right note.

Let’s delve into why eSIM should be your go-to choice.
