When choosing a carry-on suitcase, it is important to consider your individual needs and preferences.
Choose between Hardside or Softside Luggage
When choosing a carry-on bag for your adventure, you will first have to decide if you want to choose a hard-sized or soft-sided bag. Both come with different costs and benefits.
Hard-sided options are typically made of either polycarbonate or aluminum and can protect your goods from damage.
Buuuuuut… they are also much heavier than their soft-sided nylon or polyester counterparts which often are just as durable. Just make sure you’re not moving fragile items or electronics in soft-sided bags, they won’t be buffered from impact.
Choose between Handheld, Spinner, or Two Wheeled Luggage
Unless you really like lugging around weight, skip the handheld and head straight to carry-ons with wheels.
Here you have to choose between four-wheel or two-wheel bags. For many people who are alright with dragging their luggage behind them, a two-wheel unit works just fine. Two-wheelers make the luggage case slightly lighter without the additional two wheels.
If you’re looking for a little less labor-intensive hauling around of your stuff, consider four-wheeled luggage…or choose a two-wheeler with bigger wheels for more stability and maneuverability.
What kind of material is best for carry-ons?
The weight of your carry-on is not as important as the weight of your check-in luggage as they are not weighed when you travel by plane. Look out for lightweight material
Do keep in mind that you will be lifting this bag in and out of overhead bins and onto security belts, so the lighter the better.
Do you really want to travel with designer bags?
Are you a rough house traveler, or do you take care of your things? Do you want to be spending time caring for your designer bag, or are you happy to have a cheap durable bag you don’t feel bad about resting on the ground…
How big can your carry-on be?
As I’ve learned from experience, there is no hard and fast rule for carry-on size. This is determined by the airline and/or jurisdiction. For U.S. travelers, the average bag allowance is around 14″ x 9″ x 22″, with some variation.
Make sure you double-check the standards with the airline you are flying with. Also, most airlines are unlikely to weigh your carry-on.

Are AirTags allowed in carry-on luggage?
The FAA has confirmed it is safe and legal to put an air tag on both checked and carry-on luggage. For carry-on bags, you can even turn on the “Notify when left behind” option. This will alert you if you are separated from your bag for too long. Great when you’re on a long trip.
